The Tarnów Subregion covers the area of three districts: Tarnów, Brzesko and Dąbrowa, with a total area of 2532 km2 inhabited by 353 thousand inhabitants.

The natural increase and age structure of the population in the Tarnów Subregion is at an average level, as compared to other areas of the region. In the field of education, the dominant role of Tarnów is clearly visible. Both in the case of the dissemination of pre-school education and the results of the graduation exams after subsequent levels of education, the highest scores are achieved by Tarnów and the surrounding municipalities. The town of Tarnów is distinguished by the role it plays in the region, with a great deal of entrepreneurship. The structure of the entities there is dominated by larger enterprises, while the dominant role is played by the largest employer in the Subregion - Azoty Group, employing nearly 14 thousand people. The development of economic activity zones can be the region’s opportunity for development and making its economy independent of the largest companies. The largest plots, in terms of land area, in the region, with a total area of over 100 hectares in the Tarnów Subregion are there in Brzesko and the municipalities of Lisia Góra and Szczurowa.

Within the territory of the Subregion, there are the largest companies in the country in terms of their sales revenue (according to the TOP 500 ranking by Rzeczpospolita magazine published in April 2015), there were 41 companies from the Małopolska Region, including three large companies from the Tarnów Subregion. Azoty Group S.A. GK from Tarnów, Can-Pack S.A. and Carlsberg Poland-Brewery Okocim from Brzesko ranked the highest.

Other high-profile companies include Bruk-Bet, Roleski, Pagen, Polan, Tarsmak and Granite.

The dominant specializations in the Tarnów Subregion include industrial processing, construction, mining and quarrying, wholesale and retail trade, health care and agriculture and forestry.

In 2015, in the Małopolska Region, more than 33 thousand enterprises were entered into the registry (an increase by 3.6%, as compared to the past year). Tarnów (20.8%) and Krakow (13.3%) saw the greatest increases. In 2015, the Małopolska Region maintained its fourth place in the ranking of regions in terms of the number of the registered economic entities.

The average salary in the poviat of Brzesko is PLN 3,171.11, which corresponds to 76.40% of the average monthly gross salary in Poland. The average gross monthly salary in Tarnów is 3,049.76 PLN, which corresponds to 73.50% of the average monthly gross salary in Poland.

The average monthly gross salary in the poviat of Dąbrowa is PLN 3,245.29, which corresponds to 78.20% of the average gross monthly salary in Poland.

Tarnów is, following Krakow, the second largest town in the Małopolska Region in Poland. One of the important distinguishing features of the town are its very attractive real estate prices, up to 70% lower than in Krakow. Not only Tarnów offers many options for spending free time. The whole Subregion is picturesquely situated among beautiful hills, forests, rivers and reservoirs, which is conducive to active recreation. The beautiful area includes many hiking, horse riding and cycling routes, with the EuroVelo routes at the forefront. In each of the three districts of the Subregion, there are indoor swimming pools, sports courts with artificial turf, and numerous horse riding facilities.

For those who prefer other forms of leisure, the Tarnów Subregion offers a theater, numerous cinemas, historic buildings, restaurants and pubs. The environment of the Subregion is also important to the most adventurous visitors. The distance from Tarnów to Krakow, known as the cultural capital of Poland, is only 90 km and the distance to Zakopane - the tourist capital of Poland - is 180 km. There are also numerous ski slopes and swimming pools with a wide range of accommodation and gastronomy.

In the field of research and development, the position of the Małopolska Region is positively compared with other regions of Poland. In 2015, the Małopolska Region occupied the second place in the country, also in terms of the total internal expenditures incurred on R&D, which amounted to PLN 1,850.3 million. The Małopolska Region ranked second in terms of the GERD/GDP ratio (1.38%) and third in terms of the BERD/GDP ratio (0.64%).

Over the years 2008 – 2014, 174 designs and inventions were filled for applications in the Tarnów Subregion. Half of them concerned solutions in four sectors: electrical engineering, instrumentation, chemistry and mechanics. Tarnów and the district of Tarnów are the driving force for innovation. There are about 85% of inventions and patents from the whole Subregion.

Since 2014, the allocation of European funds in Poland is very much focused on creating innovative solutions in the economy. In practice, this means that the number of companies working with research centers and universities on the development of innovative solutions is increasing. The ongoing projects include, among others, the project of Tarnów Nests of Innovative Solutions which will include a Joint Services Center, a Center for Practices, Modeling and Implementation and the Tarnów Park of Experience.

In the area of the Tarnów Subregion, there operate about 32,000 companies of which 23,000 are seated in the district of Tarnów, 6,500 in the district of Brzesko, 3,200 in the district of Dąbrowa.

The dynamics of average employment in the Małopolska Region in 2015 vs. 2014 shows that the most developed sectors include: information and communication 114.8%, professional scientific and technical activities 105.2%, industrial processing 104.2%, transport and storage 103.4% and trade and vehicle repair 102.3%. The retrograde step recorded concerned construction 96.6%, accommodation and catering 94.9%

In the same period there was an increase in the number of business entities in the Tarnów Subregion – by 1.6% in the district of Brzesko, by 1.4% in the district of Dąbrowa and by 2.5% in the district of Tarnów.

At the end of 2016, the unemployment rate in Poland was 8.3%. In the Małopolska Region, the unemployment rate was 6.7%. The Tarnów Subregion recorded higher rates, they were, respectively:

  • 8.3% in the district of Brzesko, which means that the number of the unemployed was 2,861 people, including 1,035 people up to 30 years of age,
  • 13.9% in the district of Dąbrowa, which means that the number of the unemployed was 3,263 people, including 1,332 people up to 30 years of age,
  • 9.6% in the district of Tarnów, which means that the number of the unemployed was 10,689 people, including 4,890 people up to 35 years of age.

The communication network in the Tarnów Subregion is undoubtedly a great asset of the area. In 2016, the modernization of the Krakow-Tarnów-Rzeszów railway line was completed. It included 274 km of track, 36 bridges, 69 viaducts and 19 underground passages. The Agglomeration Rapid Railway was launched on the Krakow - Tarnów route.

Since 2012, the Subregion has been using the new A4 motorway. In addition to the motorway, there is the national road no. 94 - modernized in the first decade of the 21st century, crossing in Brzesko with the national road no. 75 towards Nowy Sącz and the border crossing of Poland and Slovakia.

Thanks to our motorway connection, it takes just over an hour to get from Tarnów to the Krakow International Airport - Balice. A similar distance is to be covered to the Rzeszów Airport.
